Mental Health and AOD Program

What is our Mental Health and AOD Program?

Melbourne Disability Services’ Mental Health and AOD Program was created to support NDIS participants struggling with mental health issues, including cases where alcohol and other drugs (AOD) are a factor.

We provide non-discriminatory support to individuals managing mental health challenges or battling addictions of any kind; whether it be alcohol, drugs, smoking, gambling, or other addictive and potentially damaging behaviours that impact quality of life.

This program functions through close collaboration with participants’ allied health teams, working together to formulate evidence-based, individualised plans. Each plan is unique, meticulously monitored for effectiveness, and continuously refined and optimised to ensure it meets the evolving needs of the participant

Initial Planning of the Program

During the initial phase, we focus on preparation by gathering data and ideas to tailor the program to the participant’s specific needs. This involves:

  • Consultation with the existing care team and allied health professionals
  • Engagement with the participant’s family and/or representatives
  • Discussion with current support staff members, particularly key workers
  • Review of existing documents, such as the Behaviour Support Plan (BSP), incident reports, and legal documents like court orders

Through this comprehensive process, we gain a deep understanding of the participant’s background and current circumstances. This informs the creation and implementation of a Responsive Assessment Planning Intervention and Diversion (RAPIDS).

Actioning the Program

In this stage, we put together a team of support staff experienced in managing the specific behaviours, addictions, and/or mental health issues of the participant. This ensures the most compatible staff are on hand. The participant’s needs and preferences, along with those of their family, are carefully considered during this process.

The participant’s living environment is optimised to eliminate triggers and ensure safety and comfort, creating a space where they feel at home. Additionally, a schedule of activities is developed to encourage engagement and psychological well-being.

These activities may include:

  • Days out at the park, beach, or movies
  • Shopping trips
  • Appointments with psychologists
  • Group activities, such as dance classes or sporting events
  • Any other activities that provide psychological benefits

Maintaining and Altering the Program

Regular care team meetings and staff feedback sessions are conducted to document progress, evaluate effectiveness, and identify areas for improvement. This information is used to make necessary adjustments, ensuring the best possible outcomes.

Once the initial goals are achieved, we move to the maintenance phase of the program. This involves:

  • Consistency in activities and staff scheduling found to be most beneficial
  • Introducing new activities to improve quality of life further

As the participant grows and evolves, their needs may change. Continuous monitoring ensures early identification and addressing of signs of regression, prioritising their mental health and overall well-being. Every individual is unique, and our dynamic approach ensures that care remains personalised and effective over time.

FAQ

1. What is NDIS, and how can it help me if I have a mental health condition or AOD issues? The NDIS provides support to individuals with disabilities, including those with mental health and AOD conditions. It helps with access to services, therapy, community activities, and more, to support your independence and well-being.
2. Can I access NDIS if my primary condition is mental health or AOD related? Yes, you can access the NDIS if you have a permanent and significant mental health or AOD-related condition that impacts your daily life. The condition must substantially affect your ability to perform day-to-day activities.
3. How do I apply for NDIS support if I have mental health or AOD issues? You can apply through the NDIS portal, by calling the NDIS hotline, or via a local area coordinator. Your application should include evidence from your healthcare provider (e.g., GP, psychologist, or psychiatrist) outlining your diagnosis and the impact on your life.
4. What types of support can I get from the NDIS for mental health or AOD conditions? Support can include therapy (such as counseling or psychological services), rehabilitation, assistance with daily living, skill development, and access to community activities. The exact supports depend on your individual needs and NDIS plan.
5. Can NDIS help with addiction services for Alcohol or Other Drugs (AOD)? Yes, NDIS can assist in connecting you with addiction services, treatment programs, and counseling. Supports related to AOD are designed to help manage and improve your mental and physical health.
6. What if I already have an AOD treatment plan or mental health plan? You can share these plans with your NDIS planner or local area coordinator to ensure your existing supports are integrated into your NDIS plan. This can help streamline services and ensure consistency.
7. Do I need a formal diagnosis to access NDIS for mental health or AOD issues? Yes, a formal diagnosis from a healthcare professional (such as a psychiatrist or psychologist) is generally required. However, the NDIS also considers the impact of your condition on daily life, even if a diagnosis is not officially listed.
8. Will NDIS support continue if my mental health or AOD issues improve over time? NDIS support can be adjusted as your needs change. If your condition improves, your plan may be updated to reflect reduced support needs. Conversely, if your condition worsens, your plan may be adjusted to provide more assistance.
9. What if my mental health or AOD condition is episodic or fluctuates? NDIS recognises that mental health and AOD conditions can fluctuate. Your plan will be designed to offer flexibility, providing support for times of crisis or periods when your condition is more manageable.
10. How can I get more information or support to apply for NDIS as a mental health or AOD participant? You can reach out to a Local Area Coordinator (LAC), your healthcare provider, or a support organisation that specialises in mental health and AOD to help you navigate the NDIS application process. They can guide you through what is needed to ensure you access the right support.
