Support to Actively Participate in Your Community

What is Community Participation?

Community Participation is an NDIS-funded Core Support that helps you access and engage with your local community.

Support can be provided:

  • One-on-one with a dedicated support worker
  • Or as part of a small group with other participants

Examples of activities include:

  • Grocery shopping or errands
  • Fun outings like bowling, mini golf, or karaoke
  • Day trips and local sightseeing
  • Coffee catch-ups or lunches at your favourite café
  • Hobby-based activities or creative workshops
  • Light physical exercise or walking groups
  • Attending community events or appointments

We focus on activities that match your interests, goals, and comfort level, helping you build social skills, independence, and self-esteem.

How Do I Access Community Participation Through the NDIS?

Community Participation is funded under your NDIS Core Supports Budget, which means it’s flexible and doesn’t need to be listed specifically in your plan.

To get started:

  • Speak to your Support Coordinator or LAC
  • Discuss your social goals and ideal frequency of support
  • Plan how to incorporate community access into your weekly routine

You can access this support casually or regularly, depending on your needs and NDIS funding.

This support aims to enhance independence, build relationships, and improve well-being.
2. Who is eligible for NDIS Community Access support? Any NDIS participant with goals related to social engagement, independence, or community participation may be eligible. This support must be included in their NDIS plan under Core Supports or Capacity Building – Increased Social & Community Participation.

4. Does the NDIS pay for entry fees, event tickets, or meals? No, the NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, transport, and assistance—but not the cost of personal expenses like tickets, food, or memberships. Participants are expected to cover their own entry or activity fees.

Look for a provider that:

  • Offers flexible and person-centred support
  • Has experience in your preferred activities
  • Is a registered NDIS provider
  • Can match you with culturally appropriate or interest-aligned support workers

Reading NDIS provider reviews and asking for participant testimonials can help.

8. Can I use NDIS funding for group activities or outings? Yes, many NDIS participants join group community access programs that are fun, inclusive, and cost-effective. These may include group trips, classes, or social skills training, and can promote friendships and confidence.
9. Is transport to community activities funded by the NDIS?

If transport is listed in your NDIS plan, you may receive:

  • Transport funding under Core Supports
  • Support worker travel time
  • Reimbursement for mileage or travel-related expenses (as per your plan)
10. Why is Community Participation important under the NDIS?

Social and community engagement supports:

  • Improved mental health and confidence
  • Skill-building and independence
  • Inclusion and reduced isolation
  • Progress toward personal goals

It’s a core aspect of the NDIS mission to improve quality of life.
