Short-Term Accommodation and Respite Care are support for when you may need to spend time away from your home or away from your usual carers and need access to 24 hour care with accommodation. Respite Care and STA are packaged supports and allows for your stay away from home.

There are no out of pocket expenses to access STA or Respite Care.
How to Access Respite CareYou can use the Core Budget of your NDIS plan to access STA/Respite Care, it does not have to be stated directly in your plan. You should consider discussing this support with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or your Support Coordinator and apply directly for this support at your next plan review meeting. If approved the NDIA will usually fund up to 28 days of STA per year and you can use this funding Flexibly. For example you may choose to access it up to 14 days at a time or you can decide to use it for one weekend per month. Regardless of what you choose it is your choice and control. | ![]() |

Looking to Take a Break or Want to Get Away?At Melbourne Disability Services we understand that there may be occasions where carers and family members are unable to look after their loved one or sometimes you may just need a break from your duties. We are here to support you and your loved one, so you can have some time to yourself, rejuvenate, relax and be confident that your loved ones are in safe hands & receiving quality supports. | MDS offers Short-Term Accommodation and Respite Care to NDIS participants who are looking to stay away from home for some time. We have nice cosy homes and great little apartments to accommodate you, we usually plan for fun and creative activities for you to participate in. We have readily available staff and you have access to 24 hour care if you needed. We make home cooked meals as well as allow for some takeout and we also offer transport so you can tend to your appointments and other bookings whilst you stay with us. Respite Care Brochure |

1. What is NDIS Respite Care? | NDIS Respite Care provides temporary support for people with disabilities, allowing their primary carers to take a break while ensuring participants receive the care they need. Respite care can be delivered in-home or in a specialised facility. |
2. What is Short-Term Accommodation (STA) under the NDIS? | Short-Term Accommodation (STA), including respite, is funded by the NDIS to support participants when their usual carers are unavailable. It covers accommodation, personal care, food, and activities for a short period, helping participants develop independence while giving carers relief. |
3. Who is eligible for NDIS Respite Care and STA? | NDIS participants with funding for Short-Term Accommodation in their NDIS plan are eligible. If you’re unsure, we can help you determine your eligibility and guide you through the process. |
4. How long can I access STA or Respite Care? | NDIS typically funds STA for up to 28 days per year, but this depends on individual plans and needs. You may be able to negotiate longer stays or more frequent support. |
